Paul Scholes will return to Old Trafford in charity match just weeks after hanging up his boots

Paul Scholes will make another comeback in the red of Manchester United after agreeing to play against Zinedine Zidane and Real Madrid in the Red Heart United legends match.

Scholes answered a personal request from former United captain Bryan Robson to step out of retirement and will join old team-mates including Andy Cole, Jaap Stam and Edwin van der Sar to face the Spanish side, who will also include Luis Figo and Claude Makelele.

Back again: Scholes, just weeks after retiring, with be starring on the Old Trafford pitch Robson, who saw Scholes play his final league match in last weekend’s 5-5 draw at West Brom, said: ‘In the past Zidane has said that Scholsey was the best midfield player in the world, so it will be nice for Paul to play against him again and the rest of the Real Madrid players.

‘I think Scholsey will love not just being on the pitch with Real Madrid, but also with Zidane.

We all still love participating in the game and playing for charity is something players enjoy doing.’ Hero: Scholes will be remembered as one of Manchester United’s best players Real Madrid travel to Old Trafford trying to defend a 3-2 lead from the first leg played at the Bernabeu last year.

The game is in aid of the MU Foundation and Scholes said: ‘It would be great to win the game.

But there are some true greats in their team; players who have won World Cups and European Championships.

The skill, dedication and passion it takes to be the best in the world is something you never lose.

It may be for charity, but it’s going to be a very tough game.’ Zidane has described Scholes as ‘the complete footballer’ adding: ‘He’s almost untouchable in what he does.

I never tire of watching him play.

You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get.

One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.’ Renewing hostilities: Zidane was no stranger to tussles with Manchester United down the years The Red Heart United legends match on June 2 at Old Trafford will be pre-empted by an opening ceremony in which JLS, Amelia Lily and Tinchy Stryder will all perform.

Humphreys exit surprises Cooper

Neale Cooper: Surprised at Pools decision Sky Bet Football Betting Retrieving latest Sky Bet odds Football Betting 10 Free Bet Former manager Neale Cooper described Ritchie Humphreys as “a true Hartlepool legend” following the midfielder’s release.

Humphreys, 35, who made a club record 542 appearances for Pools, will end his 12-year spell at Victoria Park following the club’s decision not to take up an extra year’s option on his contract.

“The news surprises me,” Cooper said.

“He’s a true Hartlepool legend is Ritchie.

He did ever so well for the club over the years.

“You cannot get a more consumate professional.

But he was also a very good coach and I know that was something he wanted to get into.” Former Sheffield Wednesday striker Humphreys joined Pools in 2001 and played a key role under Cooper during the Scot’s first spell in charge of the club, who were beaten by the Owls in the 2005 League One play-off final.

“He was an excellent player for me,” Cooper added.

“He could play in numerous positions, wide left midfield, central midfield, left-back, striker and he never let you down.

“He always gave his lot and is a lovely guy as well.

He was a real fans’ favourite.

I think they named a street after him in Hartlepool and you can’t get much better than that.”

United may land Italian international this summer.

Juventus may be willing to listen to offers from Manchester United for star player Claudio Marchisio this summer, according to the Daily Express2.

The Italian international has been identified by Sir Alex Ferguson and now by David Moyes as a good long-term replacement in midfield for the retiring Paul Scholes.

The 27-year-old has been at Juventus for his whole career, and has established himself as a key member of their team, particularly in their recent title-winning seasons.

However, with Juve manager Antonio Conte keen to strengthen his squad this summer to help push for a third consecutive Serie A title as well as progress further in the Champions League, it is thought that he may sign a number of players that would threaten Marchisio s place in his starting lineup.

The club could then listen to offers from United, who are said to be willing to offer around 30million for the midfielder, as they look to strengthen in that position with Scholes retiring and Anderson possibly leaving.

Marchisio s Juve team-mate Arturo Vidal has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, though the Chilean committed his future to the Italian giants.

England call up Jack Rodwell of Manchester City with Tom Cleverley a doubt for upcoming friendlies

Jack Rodwell has been added to the England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil.

The Manchester City midfielder on Sunday scored twice in his side’s disappointing 3-2 defeat at home by Norwich and appears to have sufficiently impressed manager Roy Hodgson to have earned a late call with Tom Cleverley a significant doubt in an already understrength squad.

England are without captain Steven Gerrard and Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere, possibly the side’s two most influential players, and beyond Michael Carrick and Frank Lampard severely lack top-level experience in midfield, with James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain the other present options.

Great timing: Jack Rodwell’s two goal on Sunday against Norwich caught the eye ‘Roy Hodgson has called Jack Rodwell into the England squad today, in the knowledge that Tom Cleverley might not be able to take part in the upcoming double-header against Republic of Ireland and Brazil,’ read a statement from The FA.

Rodwell is a midfielder of undoubted potential but one whose career has been regularly undermined by injuries.

Since Owen Hargreaves’ own struggles for fitness and Gareth Barry’s decline, it had been hoped he would capitalise on his early breakthrough at Everton and then last summer’s 12m transfer to City to compete with Carrick for England’s holding midfield role though it is something he is yet to achieve.

He made an encouraging international debut when playing the final 33 minutes of a 1-0 friendly victory over Spain in November 2011 in which England’s focus was on defending their lead but since then has struggled to even establish himself in the Premier League.

Composed: Rodwell’s performance was one of the few positives City would have taken from Sunday’s defeat Cleverley is yet to officially withdraw from Hodgson’s squad but he was substituted during Manchester United’s 5-5 draw away at West Brom and is unlikely to be fit to face either Brazil or Ireland.

The midfielder has featured regularly since Hodgson’s appointment and his versatility can offer several options that will be missed with several other important players already unavailable.

Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse does a Steven Gerrard impression at the club’s awards dinner

When Southampton youngster James Ward-Prowse walked up onto the stage at the club’s awards dinner he was expecting to be asked about his achievements on the field.

But host for the evening, Sky Sports’ Ed Chamberlain, brought it to the crowd’s attention the Ward-Prowse was a dab hand at impressions, especially a certain Liverpudlian: Steven Gerrard.

Some in the crowd knew what was coming, and the 18-year-old didn’t disappoint as he reproduced an almost perfect rendition of a Gerrard’s post-match interview.

Impersonation: Saints midfielder James Ward-Prowse looks on nervously when asked to do an impression Cheeky: Sky Sports’ football host Ed Chamberlain has a sly look on his face Future: Ward-Prowse won Scholar of the Year at the Saints awards When asked how Gerrard thought his performance against Southampton went, Ward-Prowse made a reference to how he and Luis Suarez were trying hard, but Brendan Rodgers just isn’t the man.

Ward-Prowse made his debut in Saints’ first game of the season when he was given a shock start by former manager Nigel Adkins against Manchester City.

He has prospered at the club in his opening season in the first-team, featuring in 14 Premier League games, and provided eye-catching back up to Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin in the centre of midfield.

He even beat highly though of left-back Luke Shaw to the Scholar of the Year award at Southampton.

Perhaps the club knew what would happen if he turned up on stage.

Jamie Redknapp Cardozo rated highly Cech at top of his game Torres should be performing

Jamie Redknapp shares his thoughts on Chelsea’s Europa League final win, including how Benfica taught them a lesson, Luiz didn’t perform and why whoever takes over the club will still be a centre forward away from a title challenge.

BENFICA TRIGGER UNHAPPY Benfica’s passing really impressed me in the first half.

They taught Chelsea a lesson.

But in the final third, they overpassed the ball.

They were looking for the perfect goal when they needed to shoot more.

Oscar Cardozo up front was a handful and you wonder why a bigger club hasn t bought him.

Since he joined them in 2007-08, he’s scored 22, 17, 38, 23, 28 and 32 goals.

Around and about: Benfica taught Chelsea a lesson in passing, but didn’t shoot enough DEFENDER DELIGHT What about that for a late show from the Chelsea centre halves! First Branislav Ivanovic heads the winning goal, a year after missing the Champions League final through suspension.

Then Gary Cahill puts in a superb last-ditch tackle to prevent the Portuguese side equalising.

For the Chelsea winner, why were there no men on the post? It’s becoming a thing of the past.

Effort: Chelsea’s defenders deserve the credit, but who was on the far post for Benfica? LUIZ LOST I m sure David Luiz will make an excellent midfield player but it was not his best night.

He looked lost at times, failing to get on the ball and confused off it.

He wasn t sure when to close Benfica down and when to drop off.

He has much more quality than that.

Playing in midfield is not easy it’s a specialist position and can be particularly tough when you re playing a team who have lots of the ball.

Luiz found that out.

Outplayed: Luiz didn’t have his best game in midfield, but he can still become a great TORRES OF OLD…

Fernando Torres goal was like a blast from the past.

The strength he showed to get past Luisao was something we saw him do at Liverpool so many times.

But it’s the first time I ve seen him do that in a Chelsea shirt.

Last night was the best I ve seen him play for Chelsea.

He worked hard, was aggressive and got his reward.

That should be a given in every game, but it’s not always been the case.

Old days: The way Torres showed strength to get past Luisao was just like the Spaniard of old …BUT STRIKER NEEDED Despite Torres performance, Chelsea are still a centre forward away from challenging for the title.

Jose Mourinho will know that.

If they can add someone like Edinson Cavani, Radamel Falcao or Wayne Rooney to their team, they will be a force to be reckoned with again.

Needed: But Chelsea will still need another goalscorer, and Cavani needs to be snapped up sooner or later CECH MATE We’ve had furores surrounding John Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard’s futures this season, but no-one is questioning Petr Cech.

He is still at the top of his game and produced a magnificent save in the second half from Cardozo.

Thibaut Courtois is another Chelsea keeper doing well on loan at Atletico Madrid but he won t oust Cech just yet.

Unsung: Cech deserves much of the plaudits for his performance this season

Three and in not just another football blog 1882 Rock WHL …

The overcast skies cleared for the start of this first semi-final of the new U-21 league. Spurs qualified top of the Elite group while Everton topped Group 1 and beat Newcastle on penalties in a play-off for the final place in the semi s. Everton came into this game on an unbeaten run of sixteen games finishing the second phase unbeaten.

Both sides had players with first team experience with players returning from loan clubs.

There was good vocal support from the 1882 group again. Spurs lined up with Archer in goal behind Hall and Stewart with Fredericks at right back and Fryers on the left. Veljkovic anchored the midfield with Bentaleb and Carroll alongside him.

Obika returned to lead the line with Pritchard and Ceballos.

Spurs defended the Paxton Road in the first half but were soon on the attack with quick passing down the flanks and long balls from Carroll and Veljkovic to the wings and over the top. Obika drew the first save having be played through by Bentaleb. Fredericks got down the right and his cross cum shot into the box had to be saved by Mucha.

A long diagonal ball from Veljkovic beat Stokes for Pritchard to collect and cut inside before firing into the far side of the goal to give the home side an early lead.

Kennedy set up McAleny for a shot from the left that Archer pushed away. Spurs countered quickly and Ceballos fired wide. Kennedy had to be replaced by Duffus who played upfront with McAleny moving wide.

Pritchard fired wide from a free kick before Obika saw his effort saved.

Pritchard fed Ceballos for a chance that he hit over the bar. Carroll took a corner from the right side to the far post where Pritchard turn it back into the box and Fryers tried an overhead kick that Mucha saved.

Veljkovic put in a deep cross to Obika at the far post for the striker to head back for Ceballos to hit over. The toffees won a free kick just outside the area which was taken by Barkley who fired it wide.

Obika hit a snap shot over before being played through by Carroll turning the ball wide, Duffyheaded over from a free kick as the play switched to the other end.

The visitors had hardly been in the game but found an equaliser when Barkley played the ball out to Stokes to cross low and hard. McAleny drove the ball home at the far post with the last kick of the half.

There were no changes for the start of the second half which saw Everton push forward. They left themselves light at the back and a long ball found Obika in the left channel.

The striker flicked on the ball for pritchard only for Stokes to intercept. Before the Everton defender could get the ball under control Obika won it back and drove into the area to score with a low drive.

The visitors responded with Grant firing wide before they got a second equaliser when Long lifted the ball over his shoulder at the far post and it looped over Archer into the net. Fredericks came off and before Spurs could get Barthram on Everton tried to exploited the space on the left.

Garbutt got down the left and fired in a shot that Ceballos deflected for a corner.

The game opened up with both sides pushing players forward in search of the winning goal. Archer saved from Duffy at a corner and also from McAleny while Obika had a chance at the other end in a race for the ball with Browning and Mucha.

He did drew a save when he met a free kick from Carroll. Long met a long ball at the far post but could only hit the post with his effort.

Spurs replaced Pritchard with McEvoy on the right and he was quickly into the action when he got to the line and crossed for Obika to attackin the box and win a corner.

Garbutt crossed for McAleny to head wide. Archer saved from Long at the expense of a corner and Duffy got forward to drive wide. McEvoy got down the right and crossed for Obika to head wide at the far post.

With two minutes of normal time remaining Ceballos crossed from the left and Obika got in to score. He lost his footing under pressure from Duffy and as he went down he got his head to the ball,

Before the restart Both sides made a change. Spurs replaced Bentaleb with Gallifuoco and Everton sent on Molyneux for Grant.

As the game went into added time Stokes putin a cross that Long met at the near post with Archer saving well to turn his shot away.

Spurs were quick out of the blocks and dominated the first half. Everton came more into the game in the second half when they pushed a second player up changing to 4-4-2. The game became more end to end.

Spurs now await the result of Tuesday game at Old Trafford between United and Liverpool.

The winners will host the final on Monday evening.

Spurs have beaten Liverpool twice in the group phase and have two wins and two defeats against United both away.

Frank Lampard set for new Chelsea deal

Frank Lampard has chased down his twin targets relentlessly over the past nine months.

Now they are both within his grasp.

First, Bobby Tambling’s record as Chelsea’s top goalscorer was equalled, then broken.

And it also appears that almost by weight of public demand the west London club will award one of football’s nice guys with a further 12-month contract extension.

To score more than 200 goals from midfield is a phenomenal achievement.

And it was somewhat fitting that the two which floored Paul Lambert’s side were classic Lampard efforts one a shot from the edge of the area and his late second a stab from six yards out.

Scroll down for highlights and videos of Lampard’s best Chelsea goals Emotional: Frank Lampard called Bobby Tambling after the match was over Magic moment: Frank Lampard strikes to level matters at Stamford Bridge – and Bobby Tambling’s all-time goalscoring record for the club Chelsea’s record scorers 1 Frank Lampard 203 2 Bobby Tambling 202 3 Kerry Dixon 193 4 Didier Drogba 157 5 Roy Bentley 150 6 Peter Osgood 150 7 Jimmy Greaves 132 8 George Mills 125 9 George Hilsdon 108 10 Barry Bridges 93 Villa fans, who condemned John Terry in the strongest possible terms when he was carried off on a stretcher, reserved heartfelt applause for Lampard when he had finished celebrating with the visitors contingent at the final whistle.

That was an amazing feeling, he said.

I ve had some great moments at this club.

Winning the league at Bolton the first time.

Munich, obviously.

Munich was the greatest.

But on a personal note and the fact it was an important goal for the club to get into the Champions League next year it was fantastic.

I ve been edging towards it recently and with the season coming to an end I did want to do it this season.

I ve tried not to let it play on my mind, but people have been talking about it.

That increases pressure.

I can only thank people now.

Quite a few have stopped me, saying, Go on, Frank , and it has become a big deal.

I didn t think it would move outside of the Chelsea bubble, but it has.

To be applauded off was a real honour.

Lampard has struck up a friendship with Tambling, saying that he wanted to share a beer in the next few days with the man whose record he has taken.

Both Bobby and his wife have been a huge support to me, he added.

Bobby is an absolute gentleman.

He’s coming over this week for our player-of-the-year dinner and it feels a bit surreal.

Head and shoulders above the rest: Lampard is the all-time top Premier League midfield goalscorer Top Premier League midfield scorers F rank Lampard 165 Ryan Giggs 109 Paul Scholes 107 Matthew Le Tissier 100 Steven Gerrard 98 I never thought I would get near it, so to get there and sit top of the charts in terms of goals is amazing.

And so to the contract.

Word is that assurances have been made to the player that a deal is in the offing.

My eyes are very wide open, Lampard said.

The club have been very good to me and a lot of things have been said.

I think the club are making the right decisions and I hope to stay.

Simple as that.

We have two big games coming up.

Nothing will happen until after that but I hope to sit down with them then.

Terry and Eden Hazard are serious doubts for Wednesday’s Europa League final against Benfica.

Both will have scans today, Terry on an injured ankle and Hazard on a hamstring, with Terry believed to have a better chance of making it.

Record breaker: Lampard (left) surpassed Bobby Tambling’s all-time record on Saturday afternoon Frank’s showreel: 10 of the best 10.

Chelsea 2-0 Portsmouth February 25, 2006 A wonderful team move saw Didier Drogba and Eidur Gudjohnsen combine, before the latter dummied the ball on the edge of the box to allow the onrushing Lampard to blast it home in trademark fashion.

9.

Chelsea 5-1 Tottenham April 15, 2012 There’s nothing better than getting one over your rivals.

Especially when it’s at Wembley and is part of a 5-1 victory.

Lampard’s spectacular free kick against Spurs in the FA Cup semi-final was a real peach.

8.

Chelsea 2-0 Bolton April 30, 2005 (Lampard’s second goal) Lampard considers his second against Bolton to be his favourite strike.

Claude Makelele’s cutting through ball sets free Lampard, on the half-way line, who charges into the area, takes it round Jussi Jaaskelainen and sticks it in the net.

The goal sealed Chelsea’s first title for 50 years.

7.

Chelsea 2-1 Everton May 30, 2009 At one goal apiece Chelsea and Everton seemed to be evenly matched in the FA Cup final.

But Lampard didn’t fancy extra-time and grabbed his (traditional) 20th strike of the season with a left-footed piledriver to win the cup.

6.

Chelsea 7-0 Stoke April 25, 2010 (Lampard’s second goal) Lampard is not normally noted for his subtlety or technique, but this goal demonstrated that side of him at its best.

Sam Hutchinson whipped the ball in from the right and Lampard used the outside of his foot to fade the ball over Asmir Begovic and into the far corner.

Sumptuous .

5.

Chelsea 3-2 Liverpool April 30, 2008 Six days before this Champions League semi-final second leg, Lampard’s mother Pat died from pneumonia.

Eight minutes in to extra-time, Frank had the ball on the penalty spot.

He lashed it low, in to the corner of the net.

His celebration let all the emotion he had been holding back flood out.

Spine-tingling, heart-wrenching.

Although the goal is not spectacular, it will always be remembered as one of Lampard’s finest.

His penalty record is superb, too, so to include a spot kick is an appropriate tip of the hat to that.

4.

Hull 0 3 Chelsea October 29, 2008 Another example of Lampard’s superb technique and ability to find a goal out of nothing.

With a Chelsea attack breaking down on the left side of the box, Lampard wedged a delicate chip past the bewildered Boaz Myhill.

Chelsea manager at the time, Luiz Felipe Scolari, hailed it as the greatest goal he has ever seen.

And he’s managed Brazil.

3.

Chelsea 4-2 Bayern Munich April 6, 2005 Jose Mourinho was serving a two-match ban and so Chelsea relied on John Terry and Lampard for leadership.

Makelele lofted a cute cross towards the England midfielder who cushioned the ball on his chest, spun around and with his left foot hammered the ball superbly across the helpless Oliver Khan.

2.

Everton 1-2 Chelsea December 18, 2006 For all of Lampard’s skill, what he will be remembered for most is his ability to find the net from outside the area, in spectacular fashion.

And his strike at Goodison Park highlights that.

Receiving the ball from Salomon Kalou, and several Everton defenders blocking the path to goal, Lampard considered his options then decided the best choice was to blast the ball into the top corner.

Good call.

1.

Barcelona 2-2 Chelsea October 31, 2006 His die-hard detractors will claim to this day that he didn’t mean it.

But he hasn’t scored 200 goals by accident.

Lampard collects the ball on the left of the box by the touchline.

He has a look around and sees not a lot on in the middle.

So he goes for the cheeky and it pays off in style.

What David Moyes needs to address in Manchester United’s squad

Manchester United need more power and versatility in central midfield, and Everton’s Marouane Fellaini could be the solution.

Photograph: Craig Brough/Action Images Goalkeeper and defence Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of Manchester United started with a 1-0 defeat at Everton, when David Moyes used Marouane Fellaini high up the pitch against the makeshift centre-back Michael Carrick, taking advantage of United’s lack of strength at centre-back.

That’s a poor reflection of United’s defensive situation, however.

Following too many concessions at the start of the campaign, United have kept 10 clean sheets in their past 18 league games, and the goalkeeper David de Gea’s quality is underlined by his presence in the PFA team of the year.

Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand started Ferguson’s final match at Old Trafford, playing stereotypical roles Vidic winning aerial battles and Ferdinand moving forward elegantly on the ball but Ferguson has rotated his centre-backs excellently this season.

Moyes is relatively unaccustomed to that concept but with Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all excellent alternatives he has a plethora of options.

Central midfield The victory over Swansea marked Paul Scholes’ final Old Trafford appearance, but his partner Michael Carrick has been United’s most pivotal midfielder, controlling games with reliable passes and occasionally spraying longer balls to the flanks.

Moyes will appreciate his skill set, especially as the Scot encourages players to switch play quickly between wings, forcing the opposition to shift across the pitch.

However, with Scholes retiring, Anderson rarely completing 90 minutes, Jones probably a defender in the long term, Darren Fletcher’s future uncertain, Ryan Giggs turning 40 in November and Tom Cleverley still developing, Moyes’ priority must be to purchase another central midfielder.

Rather than a pure defensive player or an attacking playmaker, United require a midfielder who can offer energy, mobility and physicality alongside Carrick Fellaini, a Moyes favourite, is capable of playing as an all-round midfielder or as an attacking weapon, and is an obvious target.

Wingers A key part of Ferguson’s gameplan has involved playing with great width, but this has been United’s clear area of weakness in 2012-13.

Antonio Valencia, Nani and Ashley Young have all endured underwhelming campaigns Valencia, with four assists and one goal in the league, has been the most productive.

Ferguson’s final starting XI at Old Trafford featured no proper wingers with Danny Welbeck, a hard-working but goal-shy forward playing on one flank, and Shinji Kagawa on the other, despite his preference for playing in the centre.

The imminent arrival of Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha, a direct dribbler who takes on opponents, will provide a more natural wide option.

Moyes likes reliable combinations of wide players that combine swiftly and efficiently Everton’s Steven Pienaar and Leighton Baines are arguably the best wide partnership in the league, because they create and exploit space for each other down the left.

Moyes’ selection in wide areas may be about who works best with Rafael da Silva and Patrice Evra.

Forwards The key issue is the future of Wayne Rooney his absence from the victory over Swansea was notable but such an omission was not entirely surprising and he is no longer United’s most important attacker.

He was also left out of the 2-1 defeat by Real Madrid, when Ferguson seemingly decided Rooney was not tactically disciplined enough.

Welbeck was favoured because of his work rate, and his defensive job on Xabi Alonso was excellent.

Moyes is a keen tactician who gives his players strict instructions, and may consider Kagawa a better option as United’s No10.

Despite a quiet first campaign, the Japanese playmaker showed during his time at Borussia Dortmund that he could be perfect for a Moyes side he’s brilliantly creative at his best, but also disciplined defensively, capable of marking an opposing midfielder before springing past at attacking transitions.

Having suffered without a top-class striker at Everton for so long at Everton, Moyes will be delighted to have the double Golden Boot winner Robin van Persie at his disposal, while the presence of Javier Hern ndez and Welbeck means that, even if Rooney goes, a replacement strikerwould be desirable rather than essential.
