ESPN's Darren Rovell And The Fitness Model: A Brief History Update

S

May 11, 2009: Darren Rovell writes about Nora Tobin1, a model he’s never heard of whom he saw in an advertisement on his CNBC blog:

I’m obviously visiting my own blog here plenty of times each day just to make sure everything looks good. So I was caught off-guard when I saw an ad for FRS energy drink that didn’t feature the usual endorser, Lance Armstrong.

Instead, the ad featured a gorgeous, ripped woman named Nora Tobin. As you can see here, it says that Nora is a “pro beach volleyball player.”

May 14, 2009: Darren Rovell interviews Nora Tobin,2 a model he’d never heard until he saw her in an advertisement on his blog.

The story doubles as free advertisement for an advertiser advertising on his blog.

Last week, we called attention to the ad that is sweeping the Internet3by storm.

If you cruise around enough, you’ve seen it. It’s a picture of a woman named Nora Tobin and she’s endorsing a brand called FRS Energy.

The ad told us that Tobin was a volleyball player, but beyond that, we were lost. We had never heard of her.

May 19, 2013: Darren Rovell sends out a tweet expressing his pride in Nora Tobin, a model he’d never heard of until he saw her in an advertisement on his blog in 2009:

One of Rovell’s followers responds to the tweet and accuses Rovell of being a #dirtbag:

Rovell responds by claiming that he has been friends with Nora Tobin for a decade, even though he’d never heard of until he saw her in an advertisement on his blog in 2009.

A decade ago, Nora Tobin would’ve been 15:

Update: Rovell acknowledges that his memory is just a bit foggy4.

More States Blow the Whistle on High School Football Heat Illness …

With spring practices underway, football players are 11 times more likely to suffer heat illnesses than all other high school sports combined

By Brett Israel and The Daily Climate12

Spring football practice started this month for high schools across the country, and teams are drawing up game plans for the heat as well as this fall’s opponents.

Football players are 11 times more likely to suffer heat related illnesses than all other high school sports combined, according to a recent University of North Carolina study. To block heat illnesses, several big-time high school football states have new policies for practicing in intense heat.

Georgia last year began a new heat policy for football practices that might help end the state’s distinction as the leader in heat-related football player deaths.

Other states, including Pennsylvania and Iowa, will roll out new practice rules this season. But many others, including some of those with rates of heat illness among the nation’s highest, do not have a policy for preparing players for practicing in the brutal summer heat.

The new study “really reinforces how vulnerable football players are to heat-related illnesses,” said University of Georgia climatologist Andrew Grundstein, who was not involved with the work. Grundstein’s own study last year found that heat related football deaths have tripled nationwide since 1994.

More than 9,000 high school athletes are treated for exertional heat illness annually, according to a 2010 study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Risk factors include beginning the fall season in August, when athletes are not yet acclimated to intense practices in the hot and humid weather3.

Spring football training typically involves two weeks of practice in full pads, followed by a few months off before summer training begins. Spring drills run into mid-May, although the risk for heat illness is not as great as in the dog days of summer.

“It’s important to keep in mind that coming out of winter we are probably less used to hot/humid weather and may be more vulnerable to exertional heat illnesses,” Grundstein said.

Some coaches and fans grumble that kids aren’t as active during the off-season as in the old days, so players are slow to acclimate to record-breaking temperatures. The new study found more than 60 percent of exertional heat illnesses in all sports from heat cramps to heat strokes occurred in August, as players return from summer vacation and ramp up full-contact drills.

Nearly 75 percent of the cases of heat illness occurred in football, according to the study, done by researchers at the Korey Stringer Institute and Ohio State University in addition to the University of North Carolina.

The next-riskiest sports were girls’ volleyball (4.8 percent), girls’ soccer (3 percent) and boys’ wrestling (3 percent). The study analyzed data collected from 2005 to 2011 by the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance System.

More than one third of football players with exertional heat illness were offensive linemen, typically the biggest players on the field. Obese athletes from all sports made up 37 percent of the exertional heat illness cases, researchers report.

Football’s highest exertional heat illness rates were in Florida, Alabama, Arizona and Kentucky, according to the analysis.

Last year, Florida and Arizona adopted all seven of the heat guidelines recommended by the Korey Stringer Institute and the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, which have been adopted also by the National Football League and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

Just nine states meet all the guidelines. Kentucky meets only one. Alabama does not meet any.

Pennsylvania this season will require a mandatory three-day acclimatization program.

Iowa is dropping two-a-day practices.

If a proposal in Texas is adopted, football teams would be limited to 90 minutes of full-contact, game-speed practices per player per week during the regular season and playoffs.

Beach volleyball initiative launched by Zara Dampney

After the success of beach volleyball at the London 2012 Olympics, the British public are being given the chance to try it for themselves.

The sport was one of the highlights of the Games as crowds flocked to the Horse Guards Parade last summer.

And Team GB star Zara Dampney is hoping a new initiative can encourage more people to take the fast-paced, action-packed discipline.

Best of British: Zoe Dampney was part of Team GB and the beach volleyball squad at London 2012 The Go Spike Big Weekend, which runs from May 25-27, offers the chance to take part in beach, indoor, outdoor and sitting volleyball at various venues across England.

‘I m incredibly excited about the Go Spike Big Weekend and think it will be a fantastic showcase of everything volleyball has to offer,’ Dampney said.

‘Everyone from kids to retired people should experience the enjoyment and the health benefits of volleyball.

‘People don t realise just how accessible volleyball is there are facilities for all versions of the sport right across the country, and I hope that once people give it a go they will join up and make volleyball a regular part of their lives and enjoy it just as much as I do.’ Popular: Beach volleyball was introduced to a whole new set of fans last year in London For further information on the Go Spike Big Weekend and details of events across England visit www.gospike.net

Louis Oosthuizen hits 500-yard tee-shot at Ballantine’s Championship

Louis Oosthuizen already averages more than 300 yards per drive on the European Tour this season, but not usually in the manner he did in the Ballantine’s Championship today.

Oosthuizen’s tee-shot on the 583-yard first hole at Blackstone Golf Club was pushed right of the fairway and bounced onto a winding cart path running down the side of the hole.

Scroll down for video Big hitter: Oosthuizen regularly hits over 300 yards on the European Tour It then rolled downhill for more than a minute and a half, picking up speed after almost coming to a halt at one point and trundling past two bemused spectators before coming to a halt against a kerb – around 500 yards from the tee.

From there the world number seven took a free drop and pitched back onto the fairway, eventually recording a par five on his way to a round of 71 and four-under-par halfway total of 140.

It is still not known whether Oosthuizen’s drive ended up further than the previous longest hit in tournament history – courtesy of 64-year-old Mike Austin, who hit 515 yards on a 450-yard par 4 in Las Vegas.

Stroll: The South African’s drive rolled for a minute and a half down a path, and he ended up making par That way! Oosthuizen stands with his caddie Wynand Stander on the tenth hole in South Korea

Arsene Wenger: Bayern and Dortmund success down to winter break

After a week in which German football has been praised to the hilt following stunning European performances by Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, debate has raged over the secrets to their success,.

From advanced training methods to a host of young stars and a sound financial footing, the theories have been many and varied.

But according to Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, the clubs’ success is down to one thing – a winter break.

German delight: Bayern Munich (above) and Borussia Dortmund (below) enjoyed stunning successes After Bayern Munich put Barcelona to the sword on Tuesday, their domestic rivals Dortmund did likewise to Real Madrid 24 hours later.

Both clubs are now on the verge of setting up an all-German final at Wembley on May 25.

‘The only thing you can say is Germany take advantage of a longer winter break with their club and national teams more than anybody else,’ Wenger told the club’s official site.

‘That goes when they are at the big tournaments with the national team and when you play against them in March and April, especially April.

‘ When you are an English club or a Spanish club, you have a handicap – that is for sure.

Theory: Arsene Wenger believes the German success stories are down to their extended winter break ‘ What people forget with a long winter break is during that break the international players get real rest as well, which is not the case in the summer.

‘ In the summer your players only sometimes get two or three weeks off because they play in the big tournaments, you have to get them back and they do start the new season without being completely rested.

‘ If you have a big winter break, because the national teams don’t play during that break, the international players who are the most exposed to severe physical stress have a real rest as well in winter, and that is a massive advantage.’

Roberto Mancini wants to act quickly to sign players

Roberto Mancini has urged Manchester City to act quickly and seal the acquisition of their top summer targets to help the club’s bid to reclaim the Premier League trophy next season.

City surrendered the crown they won so dramatically last year after Manchester United surged into an unassailable 16-point lead.

And the City manager, who was frustrated after missing out on Robin van Persie last summer, pinpointed a lack of goals as the main reason behind City’s disappointing defence of their title.

Rueful: Roberto Mancini believes his side threw the Premier League title away Signing a top striker is a priority, and he urged the club to move quickly after missing out on their main targets last summer undermined City’s season from the start.

We are at the end of this championship and we have time but not a lot of time,’ Mancini said.

‘We should have our targets in mind and should move very quickly.

‘We didn t do this last year.

We moved so slowly.

We lost the players that were our targets to improve our team.

‘We should move more quickly.

It is important to build your team from the basement.

When you start in the market you need to buy important players that can help you.

Something to fight for: Yaya Toure (left) and Samir Nasri were in training yesterday in preparation for West Ham Mancini also congratulated Sir Alex Ferguson on winning back the title and warned his own players they cannot make the same mistakes again next season.

Mancini accepts their neighbours have been the better team but believes City have to understand where they went wrong if they are going to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson’s side by bouncing back.

‘They deserve to win this title, many congratulations to Manchester United for the work they did this season,’ he said.

All smiles: Carlos Tevez (left) and Aleksandar Kolarov share a joke in training Missed: City have struggled in recent weeks without star playmaker David Silva ‘It was over three, four, five games ago.

Not mathematically but it was over.

‘The crucial moment was when we played QPR, Liverpool and Southampton.

That moment we had big problems with our players injured.

We lost key points.

United have more attitude than us, as a club, as a team.

‘We did everything to win this title but they did better than us.

I don t think the gap is correct but we have five games to recover six or seven points.

This is possible but in the end, it doesn t change anything because they deserve this.

‘I think that maybe we made some mistakes.

Every day you can make a mistake.

It is important you understand where we made these mistakes.

Top priority: Edinson Cavani might move to the Premier League this summer ‘Now we have five games and the FA Cup final, and after we have time to think about next season.

In this moment, it is important to finish well this season and then we have three or four months to improve our team.’ Mancini confirmed that David Silva should make his first start since picking up a hamstring injury in the Manchester derby nearly three weeks ago when City play West Ham on Saturday lunchtime looking to consolidate second place.

The difference: City missed out on Robin van Persie (right) and could move for Radamel Falcao (left)

Luis Suarez latest Liverpool will NOT appeal ten-match ban for bite

| Luis Suarez will not appeal the 10-match ban handed to him by the FA for biting Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic.

Suarez had until midday today to lodge an appeal, with the club reportedly leaving the decision to the Uruguayan himself.

The 26-year-old had already accepted the three-match suspension for violent conduct, but will not contest the additional punishment.

Scroll down for video of Brendan Rodgers Press Conference Appeal: Suarez has decided to fight against the 10-match ban he was handed by the Football Association A three-person Independent Regulatory Commission upheld The FA’s claim that a suspension of three matches was clearly insufficient and the player will now serve a further seven first-team matches in addition to the standard three.

The suspension begins with immediate effect and applies to Liverpool’s next ten domestic first-team fixtures.

Closed: Suarez during a training session at Melwood Training Ground on Wednesday Blame game: Graham Poll is relieved referee Kevin Friend (right) was not blamed for missing the incident Prime Minister David Cameron said today that Suarez’s bite on Ivanovic set an ‘appalling example’ to his seven-year-old son.

Cameron told BBC Radio Five Live this morning that his intervention in the matter was merely that of a concerned father.

‘I made my own views clear just as a dad watching the game,’ he said.

Prime criticism: Even Prime Minister David Cameron, seen here appearing on BBC Breakfast this morning, told BBC Radio Five Live this morning that players behaving like this sets an ‘appalling example’ ‘I’ve got a seven-year-old son who just loves watching football and when players behave like this it just sets the most appalling example to young people in our country.’ Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers yesterday accused the FA of double standards and throwing Suarez out with the garbage .

Rodgers spoke publicly yesterday for the first time since Suarez was banned for 10 games for biting Ivanovic.

And he did not hold back, insisting the punishment was not right and too severe .

Goalkeeper Pepe Reina went even further, saying it was absurd, out of proportion and unfair and that the authorities had got it in for Luis .

He needs help: Suarez has launched an impassioned defence of his under-fire striker Rodgers believes the three-person Independent Regulatory Committee that imposed the ban were prejudiced by the fact the FA had already announced they considered the offence worthy of more than a three-match ban.

Further to that, he claimed the FA’s disciplinary procedures were inconsistent and said he was mystified by the Prime Minister’s decision to enter the debate.

Rodgers said: Luis has not let me down one bit.

He is a player who fell well below the standards of this football club but that doesn t mean he should be thrown to the garbage, which is what has happened from a lot of people these last few days.

In the mix: Suarez looked in high spirits during this afternoon’s training session on Merseyside I certainly won t be prepared to do that.

I don t believe the sanction fits with what he did.

There’s no doubt if you have those high-profile figures making those sorts of statements, there will be a bias.

It’s human nature.

If you have people reading and listening to things, when they sit down to talk about it supposedly for the first time, people would argue whether they already had a decision in their minds.

That process, for me, would need to change.

You have an FA council member, an FA county representative and an ex-player, so I don t know how it is independent.

That has to be looked at and this is probably not the first time it’s been said.

All smiles: Luis Suarez trains with Liverpool the day after he was hit with a ten-game ban I felt Luis would maybe get more than three games.

But we had hoped there would be something in there that would allow him a greater opportunity to rehabilitate.

The bigger thing in all of this is to try to make sure it doesn t happen again.

Rodgers made a clumsy analogy yesterday in comparing Suarez’s moment of madness to a tennis player smashing his racket.

But he argued that the length of the punishment was unfair in comparison to two similar cases in 2006; one saw Tottenham’s Jermain Defoe escape punishment for biting West Ham’s Javier Mascherano, while the other saw Chester’s Sean Hessey receive five matches for biting Stockport’s Liam Dickinson.

I feel the punishment has been against the man rather than the incident, Rodgers said.

That is my underlying feeling.

There was euphoria around the time that it happened.

Everyone has their opinion.

That’s fine.

But when you come away and assess it in the cold light of day, it was violent conduct.

Bite club: Suarez sunk his teeth into Branislav Ivanovic during the Premier League match at Anfield JAMIE CARRAGHER’S VERDICT Again, of course, there is a flaw in Rodgers argument.

The FA stated their case that a three-game ban for Suarez was insufficient on the same day it was revealed Suarez felt three games was ample.

Both sides stated their positions and it was then left to the independent committee to make a decision.

The committee can take into consideration past misdemeanours and the fact Suarez had been banned for 10 games in his Liverpool career, not to mention his seven-match suspension at Ajax for biting PSV Eindhoven’s Otman Bakkal, would have counted against him.

tasty: The bizarre clash was missed by referee Kevin Friend, who had to be told the specifics by Ivanovic The FA have also not always been successful in arguing for longer suspensions.

In January, an independent panel decided a three-game ban for Chelsea’s Eden Hazard was sufficient after he tangled with a Swansea ball boy.

On that occasion the FA had called for a longer ban, too.

Pardew baffled by FA action Alan Pardew has branded the FA’s disciplinary system flawed and wants the organisation’s decisions to be more consistent.

The Newcastle manager hit out after Wigan’s Callum McManaman escaped a ban for his horror challenge on Toon defender Massadio Hadaira but Liverpool’s Luis Suarez was banned for 10 games after biting Branislav Ivanovic of Chelsea.

I don t think that’s reasonable, Pardew said.

That is a flaw in the system.

All Premier League managers are looking for that committee to give us the answers as to why.

You re always going to have grey areas when it comes to discipline and fines but at least have some consistency.

It’s consistency of punishments we re looking for.

The FA need to answer why it was 10 games for Suarez.

It’s interesting why it was.

Suarez serves the first game of his ban when Liverpool play at Newcastle on Saturday.

Liverpool have promised to stand by Suarez, regardless of whether he appeals, but they are aware his ban could be increased at a new hearing.

Former Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann said yesterday Suarez should accept it and get on with it .

Rodgers, in a club suit at the Melwood training ground rather than his customary tracksuit, has spoken several times with Suarez and his agent, Pere Guardiola, in recent days.

There will be more discussions and Suarez will train as normal.

But Rodgers admitted the club’s greatest asset may consider whether he wants to continue playing in England.

This is a guy who I see on a daily basis trying very hard, said Rodgers.

His passions in life are his family and Liverpool Football Club.

It is part of his make-up, you can t change that.

But he is trying to adapt the traits he has grown up with to the culture here.

Each time he makes a step forward we beat him with a stick and beat him down.

I can understand if he felt like that in a moment of reflection.

Am I worried he will knock on my door? I am not thinking about that.

I can guide him, like I ve done this year, and will tell him when he’s done wrong.

We will plan for the future with Luis.

There is no other thought.

Luis is very much a player I believe will be here.

Bayern Munich, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain have been linked with Suarez but Rodgers added: I ve had a lot of discussions with Pere Guardiola that have been very strong.

They are very happy with what the club has done, not only to protect the player but to support him.

The objective is to make sure it doesn t happen again and that is at the forefront of our minds.

Follows him: Suarez’s clash with Patrice Evra in 2011 resulted in an eight-game ban for the Liverpool man VIDEO Liverpool’s Managing Director on Suarez controversy Look, ref: Ivanovic shows his arm to referee Kevin Friend following the biting incident at Anfield yesterday Previous: Suarez bites Otman Bakkal of PSV while playing for Ajax Repeat? The PSV star was as perplexed as Ivanovic by Suarez’s behaviour OTHER SUAREZ CONTROVERSIES Liverpool forward Luis Suarez is back in the spotlight after appearing to bite Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic on the arm during the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Anfield, going on to score a late equaliser.

Here are some of the previous controversies surrounding the Uruguayan forward.

February 2007: Suarez made his international debut for Uruguay against Colombia but was sent off in the final minutes after being shown a second yellow card for dissent.

November 2007: Joined Ajax from Uruguayan side Nacional but he was later suspended by the Dutch giants after a half-time dressing-room altercation with team-mate Albert Luque.

July 2010: During the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, Suarez prevented Ghana’s Dominic Adiyiah from scoring in the final minute with a deliberate handball on the line and was subsequently sent off.

A penalty was awarded but missed by Asamoah Gyan and footage showed Suarez celebrating on the sidelines.

Uruguay eventually went through to the last four on penalties.

November 2010: Suarez was handed a seven-match ban by the Dutch FA and fined by his club for biting PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal during an Eredivisie match.

October 2011: Following his move to Liverpool in January 2011, he was involved in a tackle with Everton’s Jack Rodwell and goes down with apparent minimal contact.

Rodwell was then sent off.

October 2011: Suarez was alleged to have racially abused Manchester United’s Patrice Evra during a Premier League match.

Suarez was later found guilty by an independent regulatory commission and banned for eight matches and fined 40,000.

December 2011: Was seen making an offensive gesture towards Fulham fans.

At this time he had already been charged by the Football Association over the racism incident, although not yet punished, but was handed a further one-match ban for the gesture.

February 2012: United and Liverpool met again at Old Trafford, but more controversy blew up as Suarez refused to shake Evra’s hand before kick-off.

October 2012: Celebrated a goal against Everton by diving in front of Toffees boss David Moyes who had earlier claimed that ‘divers’ such as Suarez were putting fans off the English game.

January 2013: Handles the ball prior to scoring Liverpool’s winner in the FA Cup third round tie at Mansfield.

April 2013: Bites Branislav Ivanovic on the arm but escapes punishment on the pitch as the referee fails to see it, and scores Liverpool’s equaliser seven minutes into stoppage time as they draw 2-2 with Chelsea at Anfield.

Fined by club the following day and charged with violent conduct by the FA.

Subsequently handed a 10-match ban by an independent regulatory commission.
