Lewis Hamilton positive before Monaco after nasty F1 surprise in Spain

Lewis Hamilton signs autographs at the F1 circuit in Monaco, accompanied by his bulldog Roscoe.
Photograph: Hoch Zwei/Action Images Lewis Hamilton’s new team-mate was found snoring in the Mercedes motor-homeon Wednesday, his head in the lap of the British driver who rubbed his ears affectionately.
“He was out late last night,” said Hamilton, with a grin as wide as the paddock.
“When I go to bed, he sits next to the bed or on it, and that’s how he snores.” This might suggest that he is getting the better of Nico Rosberg, his old friend and sparring partner from karting days who has proved a more difficult adversary in qualifying than most people expected.
But Hamilton was talking of Roscoe, his bulldog puppy who was making his second appearance of the season following his Barcelona debut two weeks ago.
Hamilton, who designs his own helmets, has even managed to work Roscoe on to the back of his headgear for this weekend’s Monaco Grand Prix, and Roscoe appears to have contributed to his owner’s more relaxed attitude this season.
He is fourth in the championship with 50 points after two thirds and two fifths in the opening four races.
That scoring record was spoiled in Barcelona where he finished 12th despite starting the race second behind Rosberg.
He was desperately short of race pace, something Mark Webber alluded toon Wednesday, when he said: “Lewis was with the winner Fernando Alonso on lap six and still gets lapped.
That’s not right.” Hamilton said: “What I like about Mark is that he says a lot of things that are true.
There are many things he can be pretty blunt about.
I appreciate the comment from Mark.
It makes me feel like there’s good respect there.
“What happened in Spain was tough to take at the time.
Coming into the season I said I was prepared for bad results, and with the season having gone so well up until that point we were a bit on a high.
“To see us then go back that far was definitely a huge surprise and put us on the back foot a little.
Spain could easily be repeated if we get it wrong again, although I don’t think it’s going to happen because we have learned from it, and we are learning and improving.
“Lots of work has gone on to understand why we went that way and to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
As for myself, I feel positive about this weekend, I’m re-energised, refocused and ready for another challenge.” Mercedes have taken the last three poles and there are many predicting they will have a fourth here and go on to win the race, given the difficulties with overtaking on the tight streets.
Hamilton’s best chance of that happening is if there is a one-stop strategy, but given the problems Mercedes have had with their tyres, that is unlikely.
Hamilton’s form appears to have brought the best out of Rosberg, who said: “Lewis is an extremely tough rival.
He was like that in go-karts where he was massively quick.
To be team-mates with Lewis again really rings a bell and brings back memories of how difficult it was to time and time again to try to edge him out.
It is exactly the same.
“A team-mate is important as a reference and it is important to beat him but I try to do my thing.
I am quite pleased with how it has gone but I want to see the poles translated into results.
They are coming soon.”
Retailers sought for international equestrian initiative

German dressage rider Isabell Werth, pictured on El Santo NRW, is among several high-profile riders advocating the use of riding helmets.

The annual International Helmet Awareness Day is coming up next month, and organisers Riders4Helmets is seeking retailers from around the world to be part of the initiative.
It will be the third year the day has operated, and world-wide retailers will be offering discount deals on riding helmets on the day.
This year, 10 leading helmet manufacturers are taking part and more than 600 equestrian retailers world-wide are expected to be part of the initiative.
Participating manufacturers are Charles Owen, Samshield, KEP Italia, Troxel, GPA, Uvex, Champion, Tipperary, Ovation, and One K.
As well as providing discounts on the day, the initiative gives retailers the change to educate customers on the benefits of wearing a correctly fitting, secured, and certified helmet.
Riders4Helmets provides educational brochures and a CD to all retailers taking part in the day.
The Riders4Helmets campaign was founded as a result of Olympian Courtney King-Dye s accident with the aim of educating equestrians on the benefits of wearing a properly fitting, secured and certified helmet.
King-Dye was seriously injured in a riding accident in 20103, and remained in a coma for a month following her accident.
She was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and is still undergoing rehabilitation.
Retailers wishing to take part can contact Riders4Helmets: lyndsey@riders4helmets.com4

Ridley, Lazer to build cycling-specific wind tunnel

CHERASCO, Italy (VN) Five Belgian cycling brands have attracted 500,000 euros ($641,000) in government funding to build a new collaborative R&D facility focused on aerodynamics and other technologies of human power. Bike brand Ridley, helmet brand Lazer, clothing brand BioRacer, athletic performance center EnergyLab, and Flanders Drive, a mobility knowledge center, will collaborate on the project, which will feature a low-speed wind tunnel and other R&D facilities.
Such a low-speed wind tunnel would be the first in continental Europe.
The collaboration between the five Flandrian sport brands has been dubbed Bike Valley, a reference to the project s location in the beating heart of Belgian cycling.
The announcement comes hot on the heals of Specialized s launch on Thursday of a new in-house, bike-specific wind tunnel, which will allow the brand to further improve its aerodynamics research and development efforts, and the timing seems to be no coincidence.
Bike Valley is the only way we can compete on an investment level with the large global multinationals in the bicycling industry, Marc Hufkens, Bike Valley manager, said in a statement.
Like the Specialized project, the planned Belgian tunnel will be designed around low-speed testing, ideal for the development of cycling equipment.
The concept was conceived by Ridley, a company that was among the first in the cycling industry to develop an aerodynamic road racing frame, the Noah.
But without outside help, in the form of its collaborative partners and the government funds, the brand did not have the resources to complete the project.
Because Ridley and the other Bike Valley partners are Small and Medium Enterprises (with no more than 100 employees) we can only realize such an ambitious project if we can count on the support of the different governments in Belgium and by working together , said Hufkens.
Even with five partners on board, it was not until the influx of government funding that the project could begin to take off.
The funding of 500,000 euro is a milestone not to be underestimated, Hufkens said.
One can say this is the actual go in establishing Flanders as a worldwide knowledge hub when it comes to cycling in six different domains: sports, industrial activities, tourism and recreation, health, science and technology, mobility.

Wigan win big and football managers head for merry-go-round

Wembley winners Wigan goalscorer Ben Watson and manager Roberto Mart nez celebrate winning the FA Cup.
Photograph: Alex Morton/Action Images A wonderful week for Wigan Athletic, who won their first major trophy, beating Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final thanks to a last-minute headed goal from Ben Watson.
They’ll be spinning on their knees in the streets of Wigan all summer provided the cup winners don’t also get relegated.
Their manager, Roberto Mart nez, is also the bookies’ favourite to replace David Moyes at Everton.
Spare a thought too for Roberto Mancini as rumours from Spain suggest last year’s Premier League champion manager will be sacked and replaced by Manuel Pellegrini, 59, a Chilean who has never won a trophy outside South America.
What could possibly go wrong? Alonso slouches to victory The Spanish Grand Prix: a race where brakes squeal, gears crunch, an entire ecosystem-worth of fossil fuel, balaclava helmets and high-end vol-au-vent fillings is consumed and then Fernando Alonso wins.
Actually, last week’s victory at the Circuit de Catalunya was only Alonso’s second, but don’t tell that to the adoringly triumphalist Spanish crowd that cheered him home ahead of Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Sebastian Vettel, who leads the championship by four points.
Thanks to the current obsession with preserving tyres, it was a slightly dull race once again, essentially a battle to see who can go least slow.
“When I see a car behind I let it past because I don’t want to damage my tyres,” Jenson Button said after trundling home in eighth place, but still retaining reasonable hopes of picking up the Shiniest Tyres rosette.
New Root to Ashes England’s cricketers began their warm-up for the impending endless Ashes summer with an opening skirmish against the touring New Zealand team at Leicester.
Captain Joe Root scored 179 as England Lions had the better of a three-day draw, raising a vague possibility of England’s up-and-coming Yorkshireman passing 1,000 runs before the end of May.
There was more good news for England as Graeme Swann and Kevin Pietersen both look on target for an early Test return.
Pietersen might yet play for Surrey on 12 June.
The ECB have denied it.
But we have, let’s face it, been here before.
Back on top at tennis Rafael Nadal continued his swagger back towards the peak of men’s tennis with his fifth title of 2013, swatting aside Stanislas Wawrinka in the final of the Madrid Open.
The women’s tournament was won by the enduringly invincible Serena Williams, who beat Maria Sharapova for the 13th time in 15 matches to retain her title, her world No 1 spot, and her characteristic sense of swagger.

Gotta go low.
/has no idea if that applies in Rugby, but going high seems like a folly here.
-
I d bring Fonua into an NFL camp get him on the practice squad.
-
Rugby fascinates me, they re basically football players dressed like soccer players. Imagine the helmets and rule changes if this sport were popular in this country.
-
Opeti Fonua is listed at 6 6 , 295 pounds. Johnny Wilkinson is listed at 5 10 , 193 pounds.
( _ ) Looks like Fonua( _ )> – ( _ ) put another shrimp on the bah-beeYEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH

NBC is going to jam Sevens down your throat the next three years.
Whether or not it becomes popular, I don t know. But most everyone will be aware of it.

It s not a sport for short, tiny dudes though.

I played college football and rugby.
I ve never been more sore in my life after my first rugby match. Or tired. That shit is no joke, you have to be tough sob to play rugby.
Huge respect to that guy trying to take down that beast.
-
It s not a sport for short, tiny dudes though.
Yeah. It is more of a sport for Hernia and not Spencer.
-
JESUS. that lil guy s got some balls for getting in front of that truck.

Does Wes Welker play special teams?
If not then your argument is invalid.

well yea he used to be a returner as recently as last year.
-
well yea he used to be a returner as recently as last year.
Not all that different from being a receiver. I don t think he s ever asked to try to stand up and tackle a bigger guy on the defensive side .was my point.
-
Opeti Fonua is my new favorite rugby player.*
*This is the second most rugby I ve ever watched, after that episode of Friends where Schwimmer played rugby
-
Warrick Dunn is my all time favorite short, tiny football player.

while this is true, NFL players are A WHOLE LOT faster than these guys. mass x acceleration = force or something like that.

rugby guys tend not to hit the same due to the lack of padding.
a lot of these guys wear earmuff headwrap thingies and are probably called pussies by angus from the 1960s scottish side
-
This is the second most rugby I ve ever watched,
people that don t watch rugby are being stupid. It s got everything that s good about football, plus continuous action.Unless you re actually retarded, you ll pick up all the rules in one viewing.
They really barely show it, though.
-
In a rugby match, would you rather have one of these top teams, or say, a team of handpicked players from one NFL division. I hate to knock Rugby but I d take the NFL division.
-
NFL players are A WHOLE LOT faster than these guys
superfast guys in rugby usually play on the very outside (number 14 and 15), but like this puny #10 (who is the kicker), they are always stuck doing some tackling as well.
-
Johnny Wilkinson was a big time player back in the 2000s- captain of England s team.
Met him in a club/charity event in Ireland and 5 10, 193 is generous. But that man pulled crazy tail (shocking)
-
idk scripty, the all-blacks and south africans are some bad mofos playing this all their lives
-
just imagine 11 manti te os coming at you with lust, i mean, blood in their eyes
-
OT just read that those cleveland vicitms, one of them had a kid with those monsters. fucked up

yeah, but he s a fly-half, and a kicker. He s supposed to be little.
And that dude is ultra, ultra handsome. Plus, he basically won England a RWC in 2003, with well timed drop kicks. He s an all time great. There s no surprise to him getting with ladies.
-
Charlie, the one main suspect, his daughter went to school with these girls.
That daughter is in prison now, so that girl might be his niece and not some offspring. I havent seen that reported yet that is was definitely from one of the victims.
-
I havent seen that reported yet that is was definitely from one of the victims.
She came out and said the little girl was her daughter. When she was kidnapped she didn t have a kid.
I thought that was a given.
-
Unless you re actually retarded, you ll pick up all the rules in one viewing.
Maybe so but I don t remember even having a chance to watch it. I see lacrosse on TV sometimes. It s not really great TV.
-
She came out and said the little girl was her daughter.
Okay I hadnt seen that on any local news but I know a lot of places are covering the events.
-
One of those suspects looks like the child rapist in gone baby gone
-

I got asked to play by some rugby types who were in a weightlifting class I had at LSU.
Took one look at all the missing teeth and said no thanks.
-
Gone Baby Gone is a good movie, that seen at that whack family house is very intense. Charlie you end up seeing Black Swan?
-
meant sarcasm on pulling tail. As I recall he left with 4 ladies to his suite.

played three club games. got hurt worse than in 5 years of football

I figured.
If it was possible for a lady to whip out her genitals, my wife would have whipped it out during the 2003/2007 world cups.
-
Yeah Scripty. It didnt suck but it didnt blow my mind either. Actually it plain creeped me out.
Gone Baby Gone is a great movie. Saw Pain and Gain this weekend, actually enjoyed it.

Did this lady give birth in the house? Did that child ever see a doctor?
-
Gone Baby GoneArgoThe Town
-
Yeah that s a question for sure.
So fucking terrible
-
Did this lady give birth in the house? Did that child ever see a doctor?
I just read that the 3 girls had at least 5 pregnancies with only 1 actually delivering a baby. The other 4 times the girls were beaten until they lost the child

In 12 years of football the worst I was ever hurt was a sprained ankle. In one season of rugby I almost lost my front two teeth and nearly tore up my knee.
I played one season.
-
That link to the old Robbie Rogers thread in the current Robbie Rogers post makes me ask again: what the fuck ever happened to Der Kaiser?
-
Did this lady give birth in the house? Did that child ever see a doctor?
I m going to guess yes and no . Giving birth in a place like a hospital with proper medical folks tends to put a person on the grid.
I don t think these three men wanted any of these ladies to reappear at any point.
The psychology of the day to day interaction of someone who abducts another person and keeps them imprisoned for a number of years is both chilling and fascinating.

Gotta go with Argo, and I really like GBG. Michelle Monoghan (sic?), she s just a godawful actress. Hot, yes.
But she s closer to Monica Potter in terms of acting.

Apparently a coat hanger was too surgical.
These girls will need years of therapy. I can t imagine how mindfucked they probably are.

I cant believe they were held in a random house in a city without anyone hearing them for a whole decade doesnt seem like they were under Stockholm syndrome since they were yelling for help and trying to break down a door.

I have a soft spot for Gone Baby Gone because it was one of my hipster films a movie I started telling everyone about way before it was cool. Argo is probably a better movie, yes.
I think Potter acquits herself well in Parenthood, too.

just got a steal from Home Depot. Ive been browsing for a grill andsomeone, probably the assembly person, put the wrong tag on a $800 Weber Genesis 3 burner.
Got it for $499. Fully assembled.

Yes, I was very lucky in that regard. I m fairly certain I had multiple concussions dating back to little league though.
So I didn t come away completely unscathed.

Have you seen the overhead view of the houses? They are right on top of each other.
Pretty crazy no one heard anything all these years.
-

I grew up around W 25th st. and this was around W 105th. Mostly big, 3-floor old homes with huge basements.
Thick concrete made to support old houses with huge coal furnaces. Probably all around 90-100 years old. Today about a third or more or the neighborhood is latin and many with no english.
Not the worst neighborhood for overall crime in CLE metro but not someplace some outsider would feel good about being. Some definite crazies here and there. Most people that are still living in that neighborhood are really old, or people that don t go outside so much.
The back of that house was all boarded up I guess, no windows exposed and lights never on so it was really on the down low. That guy was in a band too, so I presume he had some sound reducing stuff.
-
Some definite crazies here and there.
Except for Charles Ramsey that man is a national treasure.
-
I think Potter acquits herself well in Parenthood, too.
I dont watch much TV but I ll presume she plays somebody that s terribly untalented and unbearable.
-
I just need to know more about the ribs. Did the women at least get to partake in the ribs?
Were the ribs any good?

Yes, exactly how it happened. The manager said it was their mistake and I could buy it at the price that it was labeled.

Split open my eyebrow a couple of times on head-to-head hits.
Also got knocked out cold three times on head-to-heads, and busted my facemask on two of those. The third time, I came to stretched out on the ground, and was unable to feel anything below my neck for about a minute.
After that one, I kind of eased back on my full-throttle mode of play. Can t figure out why I just didn t walk away from the game.

I d bring Fonua into an NFL camp get him on the practice squad.
you still have some of Al Davis in you

any recommendations? are there any charcoal disciples here?

2nd time in maybe 3 years a story like this has hit Cleveland. Anthony Sowell1 killed 11 women in his home and I believe buried them on his property

I have this Weber, and I love it.2 Best grill I veever used/owned. A lot of guys here at work are Green Egg guys, but I ve never used one or eaten any food cooked on one.

You can drive by the fenced off vacant lot where Jeffery Dahmer s apt used to stand in Milwaukee. Just blocks from Marquette s campus!

I d imagine it would be close to impossible re-sell it.
Come now, people keep buying that house in Amityville that drips blood and talks in a low, murderous whisper.
-
/campus is shitty
My brother looked at Marquette and all he heard was that their campus was nothing special.
I know some cities have a policy of tearing down houses where something gruesome occurs, though I don t know if there is set criteria. Do more than two people have to die there?
Does it matter how grotesque it was?
-
And I dont mean to pile on but Imperial/MT Pleasant is very rough.

Come now, people keep buying that house in Amityville that drips blood and talks in a low, murderous whisper.
Totally different.
That house has a new street address.

Adidas Could Lose College Athletics Contracts Over Indonesian …
The Adidas epidemic in college athletics may end soon. Not because of numerous1 sartorial2 blights3 but because of a labor issue in Indonesia. Workers rights groups have censured the company for not paying severance4 after an Indonesian factory closed in 2011 (Nike and the Dallas Cowboys did so).
The WRC, United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) and other worker rights advocacy groups claimed adidas was refusing to pay $1.8 million in legally mandated severance owed to the 2,800 workers of PT Kizone.
Total severance and other pay due under Indonesian law to the workers, who had no advance notice of the factory s closure, totaled $3.3 million. Both Nike and the Dallas Cowboys contributed partial severance, but for nearly two years, adidas has maintained it does not owe any of the monies.
This has caused a backlash with colleges. Some have progressed beyond the we re really angry about this stage.
Several schools have terminated contracts with Adidas. Wisconsin has sued. Perhaps most significantly, the labor strife could cost the company its contract with Michigan5.
University of Michigan president Mary Sue Coleman told Adidas in a letter6 dated March 14 that failure to produce an adequate plan could lead the (University s Advisory Committee on Labor Standards and Human Rights) to examine recommendations concerning the future of our partnership.
Such pressure forced Adidas to settle7 last week, finally.
But, even if it does not affect current contracts, campus pressure may affect schools willingness to renew with Adidas.
Michigan s $60 million deal8 expires in 2015.
