Anderson fired the home side ahead with a superb solo goal just before the break but the Magpies, who have not beaten United at Old Trafford in 20 years, hit back when substitute Papiss Cisse headed home before his overhead kick rocked the bar.

Meanwhile, substitute Ryan Tunnicliffe won 10,000 for his watching father who, when his son was just nine years old, bet 100 he would play for United one day.
